Because your body can hold stress and tension from your life experiences, it’s possible that you’re storing emotionally-charged cellular memory from the past in your physical tissue – muscles, joints, organs and so on. These “emotional blocks” are often associated with belief systems or attitudes to life, which may not be really doing you the most good. What’s more, these “issues in your tissues” can subtly alter the development and function of your body.

Each therapy session begins with reviewing where you are at right now – in other words, the nature of your problem and any related circumstances, as well as any progress you’ve made. We discuss these to bring to your awareness any underlying patterns that you may not have fully acknowledged. These may be mental, emotional, physical or spiritual.

A Body-Oriented Approach

I also show you how these underlying aspects are showing up in your physical characteristics. This makes the therapy real and tangible for you, because you can see and feel its effect in your body. Over the years, my clients have reported that this is where they feel the therapy really works for them – because it’s not just talking about their problem, nor is it just physical relief – it’s the combination of both that makes the difference.

Once you have a greater awareness of the problem and its underlying causes, our focus shifts toward what you need to return to balance, such as:

  • releasing your limiting feelings, beliefs, habits, etc.
  • enhancing your natural talents
  • how to realise your full potential

I usually suggest ways you could be in your body differently, to make a positive shift at a fundamental level. Depending on your situation, I may also recommend other lifestyle changes to help you integrate the shift.

Emotional Release Bodywork

Depending on the nature of the challenges you’re facing, an Emotional Release Bodywork session may be helpful. In this massage treatment, I guide you to recognise and feel any blocks in your body, so you can release them and create a shift in your whole being. When the mind (psyche) and body (soma) are unified in this way, the result is a letting go of old patterns and lasting changes for your life.

Integrating the Changes

You can expect to leave your session with a greater understanding of why you are the way you are, how to move forward, as well as feeling freer, lighter, at peace. The days following your treatment are an important time. To get the most benefit from the therapy, you’ll want to focus on integrating the changes in a positive and proactive way.

A Compliment to Medical Care

Of course, BodyMind Therapy is not a substitute for medical treatment or other specific health care services (such as chiropractic, physiotherapy and the like). Likewise, it’s not a substitute for medication. However, it can be a highly effective compliment to such treatments, and is likely to result in your speedier recovery. I’m always happy to work with your primary care provider to help you achieve the best outcomes.

I hold a Diploma of Psychosomatic Therapy from the Psychosomatic Therapy College, and am licensed to teach the 10-day Certificate in Psychosomatic Therapy course. I am also a member of INTAPT, the professional association for this modality (formerly known as Australasian Board of Psychosomatic Therapy).
